Hello and Welcome to a New Year of Learning and Celebrating Science,
Here is one of the best explanations I have seen of "Why Science" I have watched it a few times and enjoy it every time.
There have been many people and cultures that can be thought of as having started “science”. Technology or more science has usually followed very shortly after each one of them. For instance… 239 years ago, the Montgolfiers brothers tested to see if a human could survive at being up in the air. 131 years ago an astronomer named Samuel Langley was the first to successfully demonstrate powered flight by flying an aerodrome ¾ of a mile powered by steam. 118 years ago Orville Wright became the first human to fly a heavier than air machine. It was only another 56 years until humans walked on the moon. One might argue that flying on top of a rocket isn’t necessarily “flying” but let’s just say that what has been accomplished in the last 118 years of the thousands of years of humans on the planet is incredible. Now, the James Webb Space Telescope is on it’s way to L2. As I write this the “JWST” is 131 ℉ on the hot side and -328 ℉ on the cold side. 359 ℉ is an amazing difference in temperature when you think of the heat shield that makes this possible. Why the James Webb Space Telescope looks like that
There are many ways to learn about and celebrate science. Here are a few to consider for the new year…
You might want to bake a cake in the physics lab for the celebration!

Sadly we are still confronted by many that deny science or choose to make decisions that put many people and nature itself at risk… America’s big mistake about science literacy came back to haunt us in 2021. The accomplishments of science have been in all fields of science. One of the amazing fields now is bioscience and what has been learned about genetics and the inner workings of cells and organisms. Lets look briefly at the history of the prevention of infectious diseases. Medicine has been practiced and improved for a long time. But like flight the last few years have been incredible. We don’t really think of humoral medicine anymore, and if a doctor recommends it to you, run away! There have been quite a few theories of disease in many of the worlds cultures over the years. We live in truly amazing times. Scientists have been able to figure out the language of life and been able to produce a vaccine for Covid 19 in less time than anyone would have imagined just a few years ago. It’s just so damned sad that even the person who used his political power to get it done has so damaged the health of the world now by denying the reality of it all.
2022 is already off to a strong start for learning opportunities...

Optical Lattices with Sound - Livestream - 01/10/2022 03:30 PM
SLAC Colloquium
Quantized sound waves---phonons---govern the elastic response of crystalline materials, and also play an integral part in determining their thermodynamic properties and electrical response (e.g., by binding electrons into superconducting Cooper pairs). The physics of lattice phonons and elasticity is absent in simulators of quantum solids constructed of neutral atoms in periodic light potentials unlike real solids, traditional optical lattices are silent because they are infinitely stiff. Optical-lattice realizations of crystals therefore lack some of the central dynamical degrees of freedom that determine the low-temperature properties of real materials. We will discuss our creation of an optical lattice with phonon modes using a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) coupled to a confocal optical resonator. Playing the role of an active quantum gas microscope, the multimode cavity QED system both images the phonons and induces the crystallization that supports phonons via short-range, photon-mediated atom-atom interactions. Our results pave the way for exploring the rich physics of elasticity in quantum solids.

As a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University, he explores how climate change, light pollution, and human-dominated landscapes influence migrants ecology and behavior. He is also developing deep-learning approaches for monitoring the billions of migratory birds that cross North America each spring and fall.
Mushroom Bioregions of The United States - Livestream - 01/10/2022 07:30 PM
Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz
Biogeography is one of the most fascinating topics in all of natural history. The basic question is simple: Where do organisms live? But every subsequent question adds a new layer of complexity: Do they live there all the time? Why do they live there? Are there patterns that emerge when we look at groups of organisms? Are there strange discrepancies that don't fit the pattern? How small of an area can we map, and how finely? In this talk, we'll explore broad bioregions of the United States from the perspective of mushrooms (which sometimes align with bioregions of plants and animals... but not always!). From the chilly and damp temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest to the subtropical hardwood hammocks of Florida; from the arid interior deserts to the alpine crest of the Rocky Mountains, we'll take a tour of some of the country's distinct macrofungal communities and ask ourselves questions about time, space, and evolution.

Often Mysterious Fungal Relationships in Different Habitats - Livestream - 01/12/2022 07:30 PM
Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz
The majestic Coast Redwoods are some of the most iconic trees in the world, renowned far and wide for their size, colors, and the uniqueness of their habitat. While not associated with many edible mushrooms, these forests are home to many colorful, rare, and otherwise wonderful fungi. While the redwoods stop just north of the Oregon/California border, other trees in the family reside in the great rainforest of the Cascades. These related trees can create extremely similar conditions, and many redwood mycota are found in western redcedar forest in the Northwest. We will cover the often-mysterious relationships between these fungi, the habitat composition, and the strange ability of these mushrooms to inhabit wildly different habitats around the world.

Weirdness!: What Fake Science and the Paranormal Tell Us about the Nature of Science - Livestream - 01/13/2022 07:30 PM
Bay Area Skeptics
Skeptics usually approach fake science armed with a diagnostic checklist, asking whether the claims in question are falsifiable, naturalistic, parsimonious, and so forth. Philosophers of science, however, have long pointed out that fake sciences need not exhibit such features. Creationist claims, for example, are very often false, not unfalsifiable. Moreover, legitimate science can also fail skeptical tests. A better way to understand fake science is to shift our focus to institutions alongside psychological vulnerabilities and intellectual bad practices. Creationism is, again, a good example: its success depends on institutions that produce apologetics and promote loyalty rather than a process of learning. The work that skeptics do remains valuable, but we can do even better if we pay more attention to institutions and treat our favorite diagnostic criteria as warning signs rather than rigid rules.
