Happy Labor Day dear reader,
I recall the first time i saw a geochron clock on the wall of my hometown bank. Instantly i knew where in the world there was sunrise, sunset, night, and day. It lifted me for several minutes from living in a town in California with a few thousand others to living on an entire planet with its billions. Perspective. Perspectives grow. After a year in Berlin, Deutschland, earning a degree in biology, volunteering with the Peace Corps in Lesotho, helping to establish a wildlife rescue organization, having kids, etc., etc., my perspectives are multifaceted and messy - sort of like a cluttered attic. What stays with me is the reality of living on a planet with billions of others and sharing responsibility for protecting the whole.
You can have a geochron clock for your very own if you are willing to part with over a thousand dollars - or you could go to an Internet link.
Lake Palcacocha broke through its moraine dam in 1941 killing 1,800+ residents of Huaraz, Peru. A current Huaraz resident, Saúl Luciano Lliuya, realized that global warming has again led to circumstances threatening a repeat disaster. Enter a German organization committed to global justice, the German court system, and - to fill the role of ‘evil-doer’ - a German power company. This avalanche-hanging story is beautifully told in “A melting glacier, an imperiled city and one farmer’s fight for climate justice.” (Apologies for the paywall.)
If we can immediately halt global warming, then the partial melting of Greenland’s glaciers will still add about 15 cm to sea levels worldwide. Oops! Scratch that. The estimated sea level contribution has just been nearly doubled to 27 cm.
Surprise! With my paltry knowledge of Christian Evangelicals, i thought they pretty much doubted we are in a climate crisis - but the National Association of Evangelicals just published a report, “Loving the Least of These.” The report lays out the scientific evidence of climate crisis and asks Christians to help based on Biblical principles of “Care for creation, love our neighbors, and witness to the world.”
Monday August 29 was International Day against Nuclear Tests. One of my cousins assisted with dozens of U.S. nuclear tests, and sadly but not surprisingly died of cancer many years ago. Photos and videos of nuclear tests are awesome and captivating, but there are enough in the archives to last us for all eternity.

Mitchell A won the JWST model when the random number generator burped up 750. This time the prize is “How To: Absurd scientific advice for common real-world problems”, a book by the creator of xkcd, Randall Munroe. For example, in the chapter “How to Play Football”, there is detailed advice for getting the ball into the goal including kicking, throwing, heading, and trebuchet. Just send an email to david.almandsmith[at]gmail.com (only one) before noon Friday with an integer between zero and 1,000. We will then use a random number generator to select the target number and mail the book to the person who chose the closest number.
I’m forever exhorting myself and others to expand and deepen our ‘spheres’ of empathy. Let me share this entertaining essay with you: Can Radical Empathy Fix Our Healthcare System?
COVID-19 continues to kill (over 600 people a day) with most of those deaths attributable to Omicron variants. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention) has just approved a COVID vaccine with components that specifically target Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5. The technology behind modern vaccines has become so routine that human trials were not considered necessary. Even if you believe you are not at mortal risk from COVID, just a mild case can spread to someone in the high risk category. So get this latest vaccine to protect others as well as yourself.
Frequently i dive into science videos to help me understand our shared reality.
This first video is a brief excursion into history, chemistry, technology, and geopolitics.
This video does an entertaining job of explaining the connections between entropy, energy, and information.
This lengthy video plods through simple physics and electronics (with some faulty graphics) before finally elucidating the fascinating technology of Starlink Internet. It definitely qualifies as nerd candy.
Yeah, the usual: Be bold and expand your sphere of empathy,
Dave Almandsmith, Bay Area Skeptics
Empathy is the faculty to resonate with the feelings of others. When we meet someone who is joyful, we smile. When we witness someone in pain, we suffer in resonance with his or her suffering.

Buried Problems: Hunters Point Shipyard in a Time of Climate Change - Livestream - 09/06/2022 12:30 PM
SF Planning + Urban Research Assoc. (SPUR)
When the San Francisco Hunters Point Naval Shipyard closed in 1974, it left behind a toxic legacy of radioactive contamination in the soil and groundwater. San Francisco has plans to redevelop the land once it's declared safe, bringing new homes and businesses to the area. But as sea levels rise, it could elevate groundwater and bring once-buried pollution to the surface. Join us to hear from the San Francisco Civil Grand Jury on its report "Buried Problems and a Buried Process." Jury members will discuss what they found, their recommendations to the San Francisco government and how to better protect the health of Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood residents.

My Friend Is a Science Denier - What Can I Do? - Livestream - 09/06/2022 05:30 PM
Commonwealth Club San Francisco
In this second part of our series on conspiracy theories and other false narratives, we'll look at practical actions we can take and tools we can use to have fruitful discussions with friends and family who have been misled.
There are ways that we can help untangle the snare of a mind-gripping false narrative. They're usually not easy, and they're usually not fast, but they can work in most cases. To help us learn how, Dr. Lee McIntyre, author of How to Talk to a Science Denier, will provide detailed recommendations for countering science denial and other false narratives in one-on-one discussions with friends and family.
This will be an intense, information-packed event; be sure to bring your questions or send them to us in advance at personalgrowthmlf@gmail.com. You may also want to review the first event in this series, "Why Have False Beliefs and Conspiracy Theories Become So Powerful?" before attending. And be sure to look for the next event in this series, which will discuss actions society can take to defend itself.

The James Webb Space Telescope: Our Giant Eye on the Invisible Sky - Livestream - 09/07/2022 12:30 PM
Osher Livelong Learning Institute
The first images from the James Webb Space Telescope were applauded by scientists, the media, and the public. But there is far more to our expectations from this remarkable space instrument than just pretty pictures. In this introductory talk, astronomer and educator Andrew Fraknoi explains what makes the Webb a truly pioneering instrument, what the first images actually show, and what scientists expect the telescope to accomplish in years to come. In the process, he discusses how the Webb observes an "invisible universe" of infrared rays, and what astronomers are hoping to learn about "cosmic evolution" -- the birth and death of stars, planets, and galaxies. No background in science is required to understand this program.
Speaker: Andrew Fraknoi teaches astronomy and physics at the Fromm Institute at the University of San Francisco and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at SF State University
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at San Francisco State University is a community of inquiring adults, age 50+, offering non-credit courses, lectures, and interest groups. Many are held remotely, so you don't need to reside in San Francisco to participate.

Streamlining Building Decarbonization for a Cleaner California - Livestream - 09/08/2022 12:30 PM
SF Planning + Urban Research Assoc. (SPUR)
California plans to be carbon neutral by 2045 and have 7 million climate-ready homes by 2035. For many buildings, this won't be easy: decarbonizing will require upgrades to electrical service and/or panels across all 7 million of these buildings. Reaching the state's ambitious targets will be nearly impossible unless energy providers can deliver electrical service upgrades quickly and affordably. Come learn what triggers service upgrades; the cost in money and time; and how utilities, the Public Utilities Commission and electrification programs can make the process as painless as possible.

Strong Light-Matter Interaction in the Deeply Sub-wavelength Regime - 09/09/2022 02:00 PM
Tan Hall Berkeley
The interaction between light - or more broadly, electromagnetic fields - and condensed matter underpins an extremely broad range of modern technology. As devices shrink into the nanoscale, we inevitably enter the deeply sub-wavelength regime for optical frequencies and below. In this talk, I will present two examples of strong light-matter interaction in such a regime: Terahertz (THz) emission from ultrafast interlayer charge transfer in an atomically-thin semiconductor heterostructure, and the Reststrahlen effect - strong reflectivity in the mid-infrared from optical phonons - in optically-thin films of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The latter turns out to be an extend-state analogy of the Superradiance effect of discrete quantum emitters.

Moving the Needle: How key interventions can increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM - 09/10/2022 10:30 AM
California Section American Chemical Society
Although African Americans make up approximately 13% of the US population, they are severely underrepresented in advanced degrees awarded in STEM disciplines. Currently, they hold ~2% of tenure/tenure track positions in research institutions in the US. Despite the overwhelming statistics, Dr. Jeffries-EL pursued and completed a doctorate in chemistry, obtained an academic job, and then tenure in promotion in due course. She was born in Brooklyn, NY where she lived in public housing and attended public school. Although her situation was less than ideal, she always had a passion for science that her parents encouraged her to pursue. In this talk, Dr. Jeffries-EL will discuss what excites her about science, diversity, equity and inclusion issues and potential solutions woven all within the context of her personal journey.

Uncovering the spin-valley order of correlated phases in magic-angle graphene - Livestream - 09/12/2022 02:30 PM
Physics South, Room 325 Berkeley
The twist angle between adjacent two-dimensional layers provides a powerful tuning knob to tailor electronic properties. One archetypal example is magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), whose flat low-energy bands host a variety of broken-symmetry ground states. However, despite intensive effort, the spin and valley order of these phases and their low-energy excitations remain poorly understood. In this talk, I will describe local electronic compressibility measurements that enable us to map out the flavor phase diagram and correlated Hofstadter spectrum in MATBG. We identify intervalley-coherent insulators and spin skyrmion excitations at low magnetic fields and deduce the spin polarization of Chern insulators at high field. I will discuss the implications of these findings and how microscopic parameters affect the delicate competition between distinct correlated ground states.
